My phone number is: 208-788-2339, evenings and weekends and I will be happy
to send you maps or motel information etc. E-mail is: unicycle17@aol.com.
My address is: Joseph Stoltzfus, PO Box 541, Hailey, ID 83333.
The Sun Valley Airport, in Hailey, is actually about two miles from our house
so if you can get tickets to Sun Valley, it is just a hop from us. We plan
to make our house the center for the event, with the trials event happening
in our yard. We have some terraces in the garden that we are not planting
this year so they will be available for the trials. Of course we will expect
riders to stay out of the planted ones. Also, we have an empty hill behind
our house with my practice trails. I challenge anyone to beat my times down
any of the three short trails. Farther, I challenge anyone to ride UP any of
those trails. I have not been able to do so, but not for lack of trying.
These trails will be a good place for some downhill time trials. I will
probably need to disqualify myself from these.
To get from the Sun Valley Airport to our house, turn right at the light at
the end of the only street exiting the airport, past Sawtooth Auto, a Ford
dealership. Drive approximately two miles and turn left on Woodside
Boulevard. This is a big intersection with turn lanes and some storage units
on the left. Go through the industrial park on Woodside Boulevard, and we
are the fifth house on the right.
Alternative airports are Boise, which is two and a half hours away, but might
be a cheaper fare, and Twin Falls which is an hour away. Airline ticket
prices vary making it impossible for me to predict which airport is the best
deal. It is possible for Boise to be cheaper but only if you have enough
people to justify the car rental. Transportation from either airport is
scarce to nonexistent, except for rental cars. The drive from either place
is pleasant, on mostly empty two lane roads. Part of the trip from Boise is
on interstate. The biggest hazards in September, especially at night, are
the deer.
To get from the Boise Airport to our house, turn right onto the entrance ramp
for US 84 East as you exit the airport. Drive approximately forty miles to
the second Mountain Home Exit and turn left at the end of the ramp onto
Highway 20 East. There are signs to Sun Valley at this exit. Gas and food
are available here, but the next services are sixty miles away at Fairfield
and may not be open at night. This is a long lonely stretch of highway that
crosses the Camas Prairie, where long ago the Indians gathered every year to
dig and eat the camas bulbs. You wont notice these in September.
Continue
straight ahead through Fairfield until you get to the intersection with
highway 75. There is nothing here except a stop sign and a rest area. Turn
left on highway 75 and drive north nine miles, through Bellevue, and another
mile to where Woodside Boulevard turns right. This is a big intersection
with turn lanes and a big block building on the right. Drive through the
industrial park on Woodside Boulevard and look for the fifth house on the
right. There will no doubt be a unicycle hanging in a tree in the front yard.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO TRAIL CREEK CABIN
From Hailey drive North on Highway 75 to Ketchum, about 12 miles. To get
to Ketchum continue past the traffic lights at the Saint Lukes Hospital and at
Elkhorn Road. Once in Ketchum, turn Right at the second traffic light onto Sun
Valley Road. Continue through the traffic light at Dollar Road. About 3/4 mile
past Dollar Road is the Sun Valley Gun Club and if you look straight ahead and
a little to the left you will see the Sun Peak Trail. Approximately 3/4 mile farther
on the right is the parking lot for Trail Creek Cabin. There is a sign with directions
at the parking lot and the last line points into Trail Creek Cabin.
We need to park in this parking lot. If you do not see anyone, we are having
registration at the picnic tables acoss the creek. Ride down the hill on the road
or on the trail shortcut, cross the bridge and turn left to find us.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO PERRY'S RESTAURANT
From Trail Creek Cabin, drive left out of the parking lot on Trail Creek Road. At the
light continue straight ahead onto Sun Valley Road. At the next light, in Ketchum
continue straight ahead for two blocks and turn right on First Av. Drive one block and
Perry's is diagonally across the intersection.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO CHOCOLATE GULCH TRAILHEAD
From Ketchum drive north on highway 75 approximately 6.8 miles and turn left on
Chocolate Gulch Road just after a bridge over the Big Wood River. Drive to the end
of the road and park there. Parking is limited and it may be necessary to put some cars
at the Oregon Gulch trailhead and shuttle or ride the half mile back to Chocolate Gulch.
To reach the Oregon Gulch trailhead continue on highway 75 and turn left just after the
North Fork Store sign. This road hugs the trailers and fences on the north side of the
trailer park. Drive to the end of this narrow gravel road and park at the trailhead.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS FROM CHOC. GULCH TO STOLTZFUS RES.
Drive straight out of the parking lot to highway 75 and turn right and south towards
Ketchum.
Drive 6 or 7 miles and drive straight through Ketchum. Continue twelve miles and drive
straight
through Hailey. Drive about two miles and turn left on Woodside Blvd. Go through the
industrial
park on Woodside Blvd. and turn right at the fifth house on the right.

Trail Guides
CORRAL CREEK TRAIL Easiest, basically level
slight elevation gain.
PARKING LOT. Ride down the hill, on the road or the trail, and across the bridge.
A. At the base of the hill behind the restrooms, turn left onto the double track
1. About 1/4 mile. Continue straight ahead past the trail signed as Proctor Mountain.
2. About 1/2 mile. The single track swings right off of the double track. Follow the
single track.
Stay on this single track as long as you like. It will cross the double track again. It
will have
short steep challenging hills that can be walked if necessary. Terrain will vary and at
times you
will be on a sidehill in the woods. About two miles out the trail will fork at Corral
Creek the
trail forks with the left fork going to Trail Creek Road, and the right fork up Corral
Creek. This
is as far as I have ridden, but if you wish to continue take the right fork but remember
to return to
the parking lot in time to leave for lunch. We do not want to lose anyone.
ASPEN GROVE TRAIL Moderate Difficulty,
elevation gain approximately 600 feet 2.5miles
PARKING LOT. Ride down the hill, on the road or the trail, and across the bridge.
A. At the base of the hill behind the restrooms, turn left onto the double track
1. About 1/4 mile. Continue straight ahead past the trail signed as Proctor Mountain.
2. About 1/2 mile. The single track swings right off of the double track. Follow the
single track.
3. Turn right on the trail signed Aspen Grove
4. Continue past the optional trail that descends from the right and begin a 1/2 mile
climb.
5. Top of the climb
6. Join the unsigned Proctor Mountain Trail at the end of a switchback. Continue straight
ahead
onto the downhill leg.
7. Turn left around the switchback instead of straight ahead onto the optional trail.
1. Turn left on the double track and ride back the way you came in.
SUN PEAK TRAIL Extreme, Elevation gain 1200
feet
From the parking lot at Trail Creek Cabin, return on the bike path towards Sun Valley
about
3/4 mile. You will pass the Hemingway Memorial. On your right, across trail creek road you
will
see a mountain ridge that descends gradually to the road. At the point where this ridge
ends you
will see a small parking lot on the left and a trail ascending the ridge. This is the Sun
Peak trail. If
you see the Sun Valley Gun Club, you have gone too far.
The Sun Peak Trail is a hike it up and ride it down trail. It is steepest at the bottom so
do not be
discouraged. It weaves through the sage and is steep enough in places to make traction
questionable.
The ride ascends about 1.2 miles and 12 hundred feet and returns on the same trail. The
top of the
ride is marked by a pile of rocks on the right, where the trail climbs a slab of rough
rock. This place
is called the monastory by some of the locals and the ride down the slab is not as hard as
it looks.
